“Painting is like the air that moves around me. The same air that urged me, as a boy, to paint on the walls of the dance-halls in the Riviera and to fill pages with tales and comics slipped into coloured slabs of decorative laminate, entered the canvas through the liquids used for photographic printing or lightly caressed triptychs made of heavy jute fabric” (Vincenzo Cecchini, 2018).
Glenda Cinquegrana Art Consulting is glad to present the solo show dedicated to the master of Analytical Painting Vincenzo Cecchini. The show gathers a cross-section of the artist’s production from the 1970’s to our days. By the title In forma di pittura, In The Shape of Painting, the show’s aim is to create a bird’s eye view of the art of the master from Cattolica (1934) starting from his historic works using the photographic medium as a basis to begin a reflection on painting, from the Fototracce, to the most recent series such as La Polvere del Colore and Aurea Mediocritas. The show also presents an important core of works from the historical period between the 1970s and the 1980s.
The purpose of Cecchini’s work, starting from the 1970s, is to focus on the dialogue between painting and photography, where both languages of vision experience their raison d’être in parallel. With the passing of years, the natural evolution of the pictorial discourse by Cecchini finds its formal core in the abstraction of matter: the painting by the master from Cattolica, far from choosing a specific object, acquires a dimension of chromatic emanation relying more on intuition than reflection. The resolute gesture of circumscribing the pictorial space to a screen never equal to itself is resolute consciousness of human imperfection: his personal quest is more about making questions than giving answers. The gesture of building a screen is accompanied by the observation of the sedimentation of pictorial matter, which contained in an acetate layer, produces unpredictable depth and appearance tricks. As said by Claudio Cerritelli, the author of one of the texts of the show, “For Cecchini painting doesn’t have any demonstrable certainty, it’s a gamble defying the dimension of the unknown, mute appearance questioning space without any referents, adventure of the matter among thick layers and evanescent haloe[1]” Cecchini moves in the constant experimentation among these terms: the matter of color, glue, the layer of acetate, in a symphony of infinite variations.
