A former model and long-established fashion photographer, Von Unwerth was recently commissioned by the Official Golden Globes Winners and Presenters Portrait Studio to capture a series of portraits featuring some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Zoe Saldaña, Jodie Foster, and Viola Davis. Today, more than ever, she remains a prominent figure in fashion and celebrity photography.
With this monographic exhibition at ARTEFIERA 2025, we aim to showcase a selection of the most compelling works by one of the most important international photographers, known for developing a distinctive visual language that intertwines femininity, sensuality, and humor, while offering a thought- provoking exploration of portraiture.
Among the featured works in our booth are photographs from the iconic Revenge series (2003), one of the German photographer’s most celebrated books. This includes Mimi & Ivy, a deep black-and-white image that brings to life an erotic narrative balancing subtle humour and provocation.
Our selection for ARTEFIERA also presents a series of portraits of supermodels and entertainment icons, such as Naomi Campbell, featured in two shots (Baby Woman, 1994, and Mission Accomplished, 2014). Monica Bellucci appears in two evocative photographs: Come una preghiera (1995) and alongside Vincent Cassel in Hungry for You (2000). Finally, seductive yet playful, Elle McPherson peeks out from behind a newspaper in Crash, New York (2004).
Von Unwerth reimagines these fashion and cinema icons through a fresh, vibrant lens, blending sensuality and humour with her signature playful aesthetic. As part of this historical journey, we are also presenting some of her earliest career-defining images from the late 1980s and 1990s, including her famous portrait of Claudia Schiffer for the Guess Italy campaign (Cordon Bleu, 1989), which launched both their careers into the fashion spotlight, as well as the legendary shot of Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista (In & Out, Cannes, 1990). Completing the selection are some of Von Unwerth’s most iconic colour photographs, such as Kate Moss in Shopping II, Paris (1995), a striking image of the model in a sheer slip dress in front of an open fridge.
We also present Tree of Love, Bavaria from her Heimat series, published by Taschen in 2015, where Von Unwerth, drawing inspiration from classic fine art photography, creates a visually explosive mix of humour and Bavarian cultural stereotypes in a bold, cinematic composition.
